UConn Women's Basketball Wins 89th Straight

If you would have asked me just a year ago whether or not it was possible for a college basketball team to beat the win streak UCLA set back in the early 70s, I would have told you not a chance. However, if you ask me right now, I would tell you HECK YEAH! (Sorry, trying to keep it clean) Tonight, the University of Connecticut played the Florida State Lady Seminoles to do just that. Under the lead of coach Geno Auriemma, not only did they win, but they dished out an old-fashioned beat down. They now have the most wins in division 1 college basketball history.

Early in the first half, the lady Huskies maintained a decent lead, but late in the half really opened the game up. Thanks to the great defense, excellent shooting from beyond the arc, and good free throw shooting, they walked in the locker room with a 27 point lead, led by Maya Moore with 26 points herself. It is really rare to have a player as special as Maya. She has so much drive, and not to sound to cliche, but you really can tell she wants this win more than anyone else in that gym. She finished the game with 39 points and 10 rebounds for an astounding performance. The whole Huskies team actually seemed to out hustle, out rebound, and just outplay their opponent.

In the second half, they never looked back. The final score of this game was 93-62. Now as for the record, I am quite sure this will be debated for a long time. Is this the same thing as UCLA did 40 years ago? Of course it is not. A lot has changed in the game since then. Today there are different ways of recruiting, and not too mention this was an accomplishment of a women's team to beat the record of a man's team. Of course it is different. However, that does not make this accomplishment any less. During this 89 game winning streak, the lady Huskies have beat 31 AP top 25 ranked teams. This streak is truly amazing. You can make fun of me all you want to, but I am now officially a lady Huskies fan! This was history as far as I am concerned. I cannot wait to see how far they can extend it.

Funny Joke

The Queen's Riddle...Barack Obama met with the Queen of England.
He asked her, "Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you can give to me?"
"Well," said the Queen, "the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people."
Obama frowned, and then asked, "But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?"
The Queen took a sip of tea. "Oh, that's easy; you just ask them to answer an intelligent riddle."
The Queen pushed a button on her intercom. "Please send Tony Blair in here, would you?"
Tony Blair walked into the room and said, "Yes, my Queen?"
The Queen smiled and said, "Answer me this please, Tony, your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?"
Without pausing for a moment, Tony Blair answered, "That would be me."
"Yes! Very good," said the Queen.
Obama went back home to ask Joe Biden, his vice president the same question.
"Joe, answer this for me. Your mother and your father have a child. It's not your brother and it's not your sister. Who is it?"
"I'm not sure," said Biden. "Let me get back to you on that one..."
He went to his advisors and asked every one, but none could give him an answer.
Finally, he ended up in the men's room and recognized Colin Powell's shoes in the next stall.
Biden asked Powell, "Colin, can you answer this for me? Your mother and father have a child and it's not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"
Colin Powell yelled back, "That's easy, it's me!"
Biden smiled, and said, "Thanks!" Then, he went back to speak with Obama.
"Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It's Colin Powell!"
Obama got up, stomped over to Biden, and angrily yelled into his face, "No! You idiot! It's Tony Blair!"

Bowler Exposes Himself At Tournament

I have been upset at bowling tournaments in my life. Sometimes it was due to the performance of my teammates, and sometimes due to my own inability to perform. I have taken out my frustrations in many ways, including cursing, kicking the ball return, and one of my favorites, beer.

However, no matter how upset I have been, I have never felt the urge to expose myself during a tournament. New Zealand bowler David File did. At an Easter tournament, he and his tournaments were struggling, and he "flopped out his old fella" as he eloquently stated, to let him teammates know they were bowling like a bunch of d**kheads. What did File earn for this incident? A 10 year ban from bowling. Let this be a lesson to all you young and inspiring bowlers out there. Under no circumstances should you flop out the old fella when you are bowling bad!

Why Is Sweet Tea So Expensive?

I have asked myself this question so many times, and yet I cannot gather an answer that makes sense. It seems like in the past few years, tea has gotten almost unaffordable to order at a restaurant. In many cases, if there is a beer special, it is cheaper to have a beer!

For example, I went out to eat the other night at BW3's. My wife ordered a sweet tea, and I of course had two beers because if I am going to spend money on something other than water, it is going to have alcohol. Her tea cost around $2.20 plus tax. Prior to eating my wings I ordered, I ate a salad. The side salad was only $2.99. For an extra 80 cents, as opposed to only getting a few glasses of colored water with a little sugar, I got a salad with crips iceburg lettuce, tomato, cheese, onions, croutons, bacon bits, and ranch dressing. Let's think about that. A cow had to be raised to produce milk so we could have the cheese and ranch. A pig had to be raised so we could have the bacon. Multiple farmers had to grow the lettuce, onion, and tomato, and all were probably shipped separately on transport trucks. The tea is one plant that is dried and tied into a small pouch that heated water passes over and then they add a little sugar. How could these two products cost the same?

As for me, I will never drink tea again as I refuse to pay over two dollars for colored sugar water.

NCSU Almost Won 2010 ACC Tournament

And by almost, I mean they did not even make it to the championship, but they did get farther than UNC Chapel Hill! NC State showed a lot of composure to show up for that tournament, and get two good victories, especially after the disappointing regular season. We missed another year of being invited to the big dance, but still I am not totally disappointed.

Besides, our season is not over. Tomorrow night on ESPNU at 8:00PM, we will be playing USF for our first game in the NIT Tournament. IT may not be as exciting as the NCAA Tournament, but it still gives us a chance to compete and maybe even prove we should have been a NCAA contender. In my opinion, the winner of the NIT is a much better team than the never heard of conference champion that plays in the play in game anyway.

In any event, let's show a little pride and see if we can root the Wolfpack on to a few more victories. With our good run in the ACC Tournament, and another good run in the NIT, that can give us some momentum going into next season.

The Health Care Summitt Is Happening Now: You Better Listen

Today, Republican and Democratic Leaders have met with the President and Vice President to talk about health care, and how they can make it better. I really hope they make progress today, as I think most people can agree health care needs some changes. The only problem with creating legislation is that we have hundreds of people representing nearly 300 million people, and most of them have conflicting ideas on how to reform our nation's top budget killer (even more than military spending).

The President opened up the summit by saying he wanted a discussion where we could find what both sides could agree on, and try and come to a commonground on those ideas the do not. For the common citizen like me, it would seem fairly easy to stay civil and have a good discussion on opposing views, and eventually come to a compromise. The only problem here is that elections are coming up. Anybody that signs on to this bill, if it ends up like the last one, stands to lose their next election for supporting this bill. On the other hand, if they put together a good bill that really helps us all out, and you adamantly opposed the bill through the entire process, you could be committing political suicide as well.

What I hope when all is said and done is that a bill is passed that can reign in the costs of health care, and at the same time making it better, such as banning insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

To close, no matter how you look at this bill, no matter what side you are on, this bill could dramatically change your life. Now is a more important time than ever to listen to these debates, and voice your opinion. Send your representatives your ideas and your solutions. Do not sit back idle and then complain if you do not like the outcome. Let your voice be heard and help shape the future, not just for yourself, but for your children, and anyone else that wants to live in this great country of ours!

Conspiracy Theory Possibility: What is Anthem Blue Cross Doing?

Recently, in the state of California, the company Anthem Blue Cross has announced as much as a 39% increase in health care premiums for those with private, non-group coverage. As if health insurance did not cost enough these days, now almost a 40% increase? That seems crazy. As a concerned citizen, I do believe we need change in our health care system to make it more affordable, but with what is currently on the table, I can do without.

However, does this not seem very convenient that right as the discussion about health care heats up, a private company raises their premiums 39%? This is a great time for Democratic leaders to step in and say that this will be all more common if health care reform is not passed. The timing could not be better.

I guess you all get what I am saying. Did the Democrats have something to do with this rate hike to give themselves a better argument? I will leave that for you to decide. I really hope not, and don't think, that is the case. But you never know!

How to Make Money With Online Surveys

Many of my friends make fun of me for all the dorky, internet things that I do to make extra money, but that is ok. I enjoy making extra money every month that can go towards things that do not ordinary get calculated into my monthly budget, like new bowling balls, a bowling tournament, or even going out to a nice dinner with my wife.

The newest thing that I have started recently is filling out online surveys. I tried a number of sites, and most of them did not pan out to much, but then I stumbled across a new site called Opinion Outpost. I read some blogs and forums and the site had pretty good reviews. I finally signed up and low and behold, I have been a member for three weeks, filled out 5 surveys and have made $8.80! Now this may not seem like much to you, but eavh survey typically takes around 20 minutes, so this is not that bad.

If you feel like you have some free time to kill, and want to make a few bucks, check this site out.

Snow in North Carolina!!!!

If you are anything like me, nothing will make you happier than to have a fresh coat of snow on the ground. I love the cold weather and I cannot wait for this weekend. I just checked the most recent weather report, and they are now calling for possibly up to 7 inches of snow in Gastonia! I am so excited. This will be the first bit of snow my son will get to see. Luckily, we have a big, cuddly snowsuit for him to wear to stay warm in. I am certain he will enjoy it as we have yet to find something he dislikes.

Do you have any special plans for this weekend's wintry mix? I fully plan on finding anything in my garage that I can spray with cooking spray and find a big hill to slide down. Maybe we will also have a snowball fight, or a good wrestling match. The possibilities of having fun in the snow are endless, and I cannot wait!

Just one more thing, please be careful if you have to drive in this weather. Drive slower!

I Am Getting Sick and Tired of Political Emails

I cannot count the endless barrage of political emails I receive on a daily basis. The worst part about them is that none of them have been fact checked at all. They are mostly all opinionated and completely dilute the actual facts. I may not agree with everyTHING our current President is doing and all his ideas, but do I think he is a terrorist? No. I may be a conservative for the most part, but do I worship Rush Limbaugh? No.

The problem with those political emails is that they only get forwarded when people agree with what they say, whether or not they are true. I used to attempt to fact-check them so I could make my own decision on how I feel and what I believe to be true, but too many of them come in now to make this feasible. If you agree with me and you are tired of all the political emails, then stand tall with me!!! And by stand tall, I mean to simply delete them without reading them.

New Recall On Graco Travel Systems

Today, the CPSC, otherwise known as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced a recall on over 1.5 million strollers made by Graco company, and this recall is serious. Believe it or not, the reason for the recall is children's fingertips have been reported as being amputated or severly lacerated by a particular hinge on the following stroller and travel system models:

The Passage
The Alano
The Spree

To read the statement released by the CPSC, click here.

With the recent release of cadmium being found in children's jewelry, and this recall, makes me wonder what products out there are safe for use. A parent's job is obviously to provide a safe environment for their children to grow up in and be healthy, but this is coming harder and harder to accomplish. In any event, if you have any of the above model strollers, be sure to get this issue corrected.

What Happened to my Health Benefits???

My wife went yesterday to refill her prescription for birth control. Immediately following the purchase was a phone call to me stating WTF? I said the same thing, and upon investigation found out that my benefits have dramatically changed since last year. I now have a high deductible plan, and until that deductible is covered, I pay a hefty amount for doctor visits and prescriptions. For example, we took Billy Jr to the doctor the other week and it cost 98 dollars! Her Yaz prescription was 56! Condoms would be cheaper.

Update: I do not feel better about my benefits after posting this.

Mark McGwire Admits to Steroid Use

I have long been a fan of Mark McGwire, but I have often questioned whether or not he used steroids. Well today, he answered that question. He has finally admitted to steroid use, including when he broke the single season home run record. This is yet another devastating blow to the sport of baseball. I grew up loving the sport and loved watching the game, but it has changed. Now it seems that people care more about a 500 foot home run than seeing a great pitcher's duel going into the 9th inning. Sure, the occasional home run is exciting, but not at the cost of the integrity of the sport. What would happen to golf if one or two players on the Tour could hit 500 yard drives and could barely fit into their golf shirts? In my opinion, the idea of professional sports is that you worked hard and you are at the top of your game. You are one of the best in the world and you get to play on that grand stage in front of the world. Plus, an added bonus, we will pay you a ton of money to do it. Here is the setback. You have to follow the law just like everyone else. You cannot drink and drive. You cannot carry around a gun in your jogging pants. You cannot do steroids. These seem like easy requests to follow for us common folk, but seem much more difficult, even for some college players today. I sure would like to go back in time when professional athletes were merely athletes. I am going to find it real hard to approve of the heroes my son chooses not knowing whether or not they have values. Oh well, I guess this is just another let down for the kids, one less role model to look up to. Thanks Mark McGwire.

My New Year's Resolutions for 2010

For those of you that know me, you will easily guess the number one resolution on my long list to better my life. I have been carrying a few extra pounds for quite some time now, and with the birth of my first son, it is definitely time to burn them off. However, this is not an easy feat to accomplish. Well I have a powerful ally on my team this time, and his name is Wii Fit. This is quite possibly the most fun I have ever had exercising. It has a wide array of games aimed at increasing strength, balance, and even correcting your posture. It is the best money I have spent in a long time.

My second resolution is geared toward my health as well, and it is to quit smoking for good. I find myself too often these days going back to that cigarette when I am stressed out, or sometimes at the occasional social event. I would like to spend the better part of 2010 smoke free.

My final resolution for this new year is to share more pictures of my son. I love jumping on Facebook and seeing all the great pictures of everyone and their families, and I have gotten really lazy with this task. For 2010, I will be more consistently updateing my Facebook pages with pictures of my son for all my close frineds and family to see.

Happy New Year Everyone!
