Mark McGwire Admits to Steroid Use

I have long been a fan of Mark McGwire, but I have often questioned whether or not he used steroids. Well today, he answered that question. He has finally admitted to steroid use, including when he broke the single season home run record. This is yet another devastating blow to the sport of baseball. I grew up loving the sport and loved watching the game, but it has changed. Now it seems that people care more about a 500 foot home run than seeing a great pitcher's duel going into the 9th inning. Sure, the occasional home run is exciting, but not at the cost of the integrity of the sport. What would happen to golf if one or two players on the Tour could hit 500 yard drives and could barely fit into their golf shirts? In my opinion, the idea of professional sports is that you worked hard and you are at the top of your game. You are one of the best in the world and you get to play on that grand stage in front of the world. Plus, an added bonus, we will pay you a ton of money to do it. Here is the setback. You have to follow the law just like everyone else. You cannot drink and drive. You cannot carry around a gun in your jogging pants. You cannot do steroids. These seem like easy requests to follow for us common folk, but seem much more difficult, even for some college players today. I sure would like to go back in time when professional athletes were merely athletes. I am going to find it real hard to approve of the heroes my son chooses not knowing whether or not they have values. Oh well, I guess this is just another let down for the kids, one less role model to look up to. Thanks Mark McGwire.
